Opportunities to work while studying

Studying while working in Germany

Working during your studies in Germany is not only possible, but it is also an excellent way to finance part of your expenses, gain professional experience, and integrate more into German society.

In Germany, many students work during their free time, and international students can also work in Germany alongside their studies.

Rules and Limits for International Students on Work:

• 140 full days or 280 half-days per year: This is the annual work limit. A "full day" corresponds to 8 hours of work, and a "half-day" to 4 hours. You can distribute these hours as you wish throughout the year.
• During the semester periods: You can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester. Exceeding this limit would result in higher social security contribution obligations, as you would no longer be considered a full-time student by the authorities.
• During semester breaks: During university breaks, you are allowed to work full-time without restrictions on the number of hours per week, within the limit of 140 full days/280 half-days per year.
• Self-employment or freelance work: These types of activities generally require special permission from the Foreigners' Office and are usually not granted if they risk interfering with your studies.

Common Job Types for Students:

• Minijobs: These are jobs where you earn up to 538 euros per month (figure from January 2024). These jobs are generally exempt from taxes and social contributions for full-time students. They are very popular because they are simple and not very demanding.
• Student employee: This is an excellent option if you find a job related to your field of study. Not only do you earn money, but you also gain valuable experience relevant to your resume. You pay minimal contributions for pension insurance, but are generally exempt from other social contributions (health insurance, unemployment).
• Academic assistants: Many universities hire students to assist with research, administration, or tutoring. This is a great way to stay connected to your field of study while working.
• Service jobs: Waiter, store clerk, delivery person, babysitter, etc., are flexible jobs that are often available.
