In Germany, vocational training in refrigeration and cooling technology corresponds to the profession of mechatronics technician for refrigeration technology (Mechatroniker/Mechatronikerin für Kältetechnik). It is a dual training program lasting 3.5 years (theoretical courses at vocational school combined with practical immersion in a company), where trainees learn to design, assemble, wire, program, and commission refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems. They also acquire skills in diagnostics, safety checks, and maintenance at customer sites. The tasks include installing refrigeration networks, electrical systems, control units, and commissioning complete installations, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and environmentally responsible practices related to refrigerants.
