Vocational welding training in Germany prepares learners for the requirements of metal construction and industrial maintenance through a dual system that alternates between school and workshop/company training. Trainees learn the main welding processes : MIG (metal inert gas welding), MAG (metal active gas welding), TIG (tungsten inert gas welding), and shielded metal arc welding. Training covers joint preparation (cutting, beveling), selection of consumables, parameter settings, reading technical drawings, understanding metals and their properties (steel, stainless steel, aluminum), manual and robotic welding, as well as quality control (visual inspection, dye penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing), all in compliance with safety regulations. The program also teaches how to work according to WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), ensuring traceability and quality assurance. It includes extensive hands‑on practice on real components and construction mock‑ups to develop strong operational skills.

Depending on the path, the training in metal construction lasts 3 to 3.5 years, under paid contract, with a state diploma (IHK) and welder qualifications (EN ISO 9606) through accredited centers. The job opportunities cover the metal construction industry, piping, energy, railways, and industrial maintenance.

To pursue welding training in Germany, you must

  • Have at least a high school diploma or an equivalent degree
  • Have a B2 level of German, (some training schools in Germany accept B1 level)
