Who can pursue vocational training in Germany?

Eligibility requirements

For most vocational training programs in companies (called Ausbildung), German law does not require a specific diploma, but most companies prefer that the candidate has completed secondary school (high school or college).

In practice, having a level equivalent to the 10th grade, senior year, or high school diploma greatly increases the chances of being accepted, as many companies require a school diploma (often at the 10th or 12th grade level).

For some more specialized training programs (health, technical, IT), it is often necessary to have 12 years of schooling, which corresponds to the high school diploma level.

In Germany, classes and work during training are conducted in German. Therefore, to pursue vocational training in Germany, it is recommended to have at least a B1 level of German, and sometimes B2 depending on the type of training.

To understand explanations well and communicate with colleagues, at least a B1 level is required.

Some more technical training programs or those in the health field require a B2 level, as the vocabulary is more difficult.

The better your German level, the more likely you are to be accepted.

Officially, Germany allows starting training at any age, even after 40, but you must meet the visa requirements, which can be more difficult starting at age 35.

One of the essential conditions to start vocational training in Germany is to obtain a training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag). Without this signed contract with a German company, it is impossible to apply for the training visa. The Vorabstimmung is a document issued by the German administration that confirms in advance that the contract is valid and accepted for the visa. This greatly facilitates the process. Campus Germany assists candidates by providing both training contracts and the Vorabstimmung, making the process simpler and faster for you.
