The vocational training program for foresters in Germany (Ausbildung zum Forstwirt/zur Forstwirtin) is a three‑year course that prepares learners for sustainable forest management. It combines theoretical instruction at specialized schools with practical fieldwork, where future foresters learn to plant, protect, and maintain forest stands, to identify and combat diseases and pests, and to carry out silvicultural tasks such as regeneration, pruning, habitat maintenance, or the construction of forest roads. The training also includes the use of forestry machinery and chainsaws, which are essential tools of the profession.

At the end of the training, graduates are qualified to work in forestry enterprises, public services (municipalities, federal states, or the federal administration), or specialized companies. The profession requires good physical fitness, a strong interest in outdoor work, and a keen sense of environmental responsibility, since foresters play an essential role in preserving ecosystems, managing natural resources, and protecting the land.

To follow a forestry training program in Germany, you need :

  • At least a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • A German language level of B2 (although some training schools in Germany accept B1)
  • To be under 32 years old (a common condition for international programs).
