The vocational training program for gamekeepers in Germany, known as Ausbildung zum Revierjäger, is a state‑recognized profession that takes place over three years within the German dual system, combining company‑based apprenticeship with specialized school instruction. Apprentices acquire all the skills necessary for managing a hunting territory : studying animal populations, sustainable game management, land development, handling and mastering firearms, habitat protection, as well as in‑depth training in hunting law and nature conservation. This training is strictly regulated by federal provisions, such as the regulation on vocational training for gamekeepers, which officially defines the content and requirements of the profession.

At the end of the training, graduates obtain the title of Revierjäger (professional gamekeeper) and can work in a variety of fields: forestry administrations, nature reserves, large private estates, wildlife management organizations, or as hunting guides. The profession includes organizing hunts, monitoring territories, tracking species, combating poaching, and raising public awareness about nature. Professionals may further advance by preparing for the Revierjagdmeister examination (head gamekeeper), a higher qualification that allows them, among other responsibilities, to train future gamekeepers.

To follow a  Gamekeeper training program in Germany, you need :

  • At least a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • A German language level of B2 (although some training schools in Germany accept B1)
  • To be under 32 years old (a common condition for international programs)
