The professional training of public works workers(Tiefbaufacharbeiter/Tiefbaufacharbeiterin)in Germany, lasting three years in dual system(theoretical courses at the training school and practical immersion in the company) prepares learners to work on infrastructure sites: roads, networks, foundations, pipelines, roadways, energy networks, or urban development. During the training, they learn to dig and secure trenches, operate construction tools and machines (such as shovels, compactors, leveling lasers),prepare surfaces, install pipelines, as well as perform paving, asphalting, or concrete work. The training also includes reading plans, topographic measurements, and safety rules on site.

Public works workers play an essential role in the construction and modernization of infrastructure: roads, railways, water and electricity networks, pipelines, or fiber optic networks. The work is mainly done outdoors, in teams, in physically demanding environments. The training then allows for specialization : road and networks, pipelines, roads, civil engineering, pipe laying, railway specialties, etc. It is a highly sought-after profession with strong job prospects, particularly due to the renewal of infrastructure and urban development projects.

To follow a training program as a public works worker in Germany, you need to :

  • Have at least a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification
  • Have a B2 level of German, (some training schools in Germany accept a B1 level)
  • Be under 32 years old(a common requirement for international programs)
